Hello! I’m Matthew J. Kelly and welcome to A Night of Color. Starting out as an idea, my Sophomore Year of college I had a conversion with a fellow POC classmate one night and we discussed why POC artist are not represented enough in this industry, or shown enough credit in Tv/Film, Stage, Producing, Directing, Etc. Color Cabaret showcases the talent, diversity and a celebration of POC artist in UAB’s Theatre Department. Co-Directed by both Devin and I, we bring to you students giving their hearts and soul into their craft that they have been working on since coming to UAB. The theatre industry is dominated by whiteness. The Great White Way has been at the forefront for years and continues to do so. After the BLACK LIVES MATTER protests and the mistreatment of nonwhite artists in the theatre industry, creating this cabaret was more than just a fun idea, but a way of celebrating ourselves. With a “Night of Color”, we get to share a space of love, communit, celebration and the fact that are we are inherently worthy. Please Join us in cheering on our students and continuing this necessary Dialogue!
